Review: On Stranger Tides

Director: Rob Marshall

Starring: Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane, Geoffrey Rush

Year: 2011

Genre: Action/Adventure

Rated: PG-13

Length: 136 min.

IMDB Summary: Jack Sparrow and Barbossa embark on a quest to find the elusive fountain of youth, only to discover that Blackbeard and his daughter are after it too.

Review:
After the At World's End fiasco, the Pirates series rejuvenates itself with this adventurous, free-spirited followup. Penelope Cruz and Sam Claflin are definitely no Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom--they are far more talented actors and they bring a refreshing new flavor to the series. Brimming with wit and energy, this installment of the Pirates series holds onto the youthful vivacity that was integral to the success of the previous movies, while at the same time putting a new spin on the pirate's life, as Jack Sparrow--fleeing the authorities as usual--meets new friends, enemies and rivals in his quest to reclaim the Black Pearl. Although it may not have the charm of the previous films, On Stranger Tides proves to be a fine successor.

For Parents:
Some action/adventure violence, including hand-to-hand combat, cannon fire and guns.

My Rating:
****
